Concrete and paver patios built to fit your yard

As patio builders in San Antonio, TX, we work in two materials: poured concrete and pavers. A concrete patio is poured in place, and it can be broom finished or stamped. A paver patio is made of separate pavers laid over a compacted base, with edge restraints around the outside. Both start with a free estimate.

Duck Property Care is based in San Antonio and builds patios along the San Antonio to Austin corridor. That takes in Hill Country towns such as Boerne and I-35 cities such as New Braunfels. We also build composite decks and install artificial turf, so a patio can be planned alongside either one. Financing is available on larger projects, and you can call or text (512) 905-8038 for a free estimate.

Choosing a Broom Finished or Stamped Concrete Patio

A concrete patio is poured in place, then finished on top. The work starts under the concrete. A national concrete association says the ground there should be compacted evenly and sloped for drainage. The finish on top is your choice, and we offer two.

A broom finish is the plain, practical one. A push broom is drawn across the fresh surface and leaves fine lines. The same association calls for that texture on patios, because it gives the surface grip when it is wet.

A stamped concrete patio is the decorative one. A pattern is pressed into the fresh concrete, and color can be added. A stamped patio we built has a darker border and curved steps down to the yard.

Paver Patio Installation Over a Compacted Base

A paver patio is built from separate pavers instead of one poured surface. We lay the pavers over a compacted base, which means the base is packed down tight first. Edge restraints run around the outside and hold the pavers in line.

Pavers pair well with other surfaces in a yard. A paver patio we built sits beside an artificial turf lawn. We have also set square stepping stones in gravel.

What Patio Builders Plan For in San Antonio Yards

Our service areas sit where two kinds of ground meet. The Blackland Prairie's dark clay runs from the Red River down to Bexar County. That clay shrinks and swells, and large, deep cracks open in it in dry weather. West of that belt, toward the Hill Country, upland soils are mostly shallow and stony over limestone.

Each kind of ground changes how a patio is planned, and so does water. U.S. Department of Energy guidance says a patio within 10 feet of the foundation should slope away from the house. The grade it gives is 2 percent, about a quarter inch of drop per foot. Tell us where water stands in your yard after a hard rain.

Heat is the last thing to plan for. San Antonio averages 18 days a year at 100 degrees or hotter. Heat and wind dry fresh concrete fast, so a national concrete association says to protect it during finishing. For your part, think about where the afternoon shade falls before you settle on a spot.

Patio Installation Questions, Answered

Common questions about patio installation across the San Antonio to Austin corridor. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does patio installation cost in San Antonio?
The price depends mostly on the size of the patio and the finish you choose. How easy it is to reach the backyard matters too. Estimates are free, and financing is available on larger projects. Call or text (512) 905-8038 and tell us what you have in mind.
Is a concrete patio or a paver patio better?
It comes down to the look you want. A concrete patio is poured in place, with a broom finish or a stamped pattern. A paver patio is made of separate pavers over a compacted base. We build both, so you can ask for an estimate on either one.
How thick should a concrete patio be?
One national trade guide says a concrete patio is generally poured at a minimum thickness of 4 inches. For heavy loads such as a hot tub, the same guide suggests 5 or 6 inches. Local building codes may set their own minimum thickness.
Will a concrete patio crack?
It can. Concrete shrinks as it dries, and a national concrete association says cracks cannot be prevented entirely. They can be controlled with joints, which are planned lines where a crack can form. For concrete 4 inches thick, its guidance puts the joints about 10 feet apart.
What should I ask patio contractors before I hire one?
Ask how thick the concrete will be and where the joints will go. Ask which way the patio will drain. For a paver patio, ask what goes under the pavers and what holds the edges. Bring the same questions to us, since the estimate is free.
How do I keep a new patio clean?
Sweep it off and rinse it with a hose when it needs it. When it is due for a deeper wash, we offer patio cleaning as a separate service.
