Deck and Fence Cleaning in San Antonio, TX

Deck and Fence · San Antonio, TX

Gray weathered wood, washed back to its color

Deck cleaning and fence cleaning are their own kind of work. Wood is soft and it soaks up water, so the pressure has to match the surface. We wash wood decks, composite decks and wood privacy fences around San Antonio and up the corridor toward Austin. What you want at the end is an even, clean surface that still looks like wood.

Most of what makes a fence look bad is alive. Green algae and black mildew take hold on the shaded side, where the boards stay damp for days after rain. Those panels get the same soft wash method we use on houses. The solutions kill the growth at the root. The pressure stays low and the solution does the heavy part.

What We Handle

  • Wood privacy fence washing, both sides of every panel
  • Cedar and pine pickets cleaned at low pressure with a wide fan tip
  • Deck boards, rails, stairs, posts and gates
  • Composite decking washed with solution and a soft brush
  • Green algae and black mildew pulled off shaded panels
  • Tannin stains from live oak leaf drop lifted out of deck boards
  • White mineral marks from sprinkler overspray worked out of the wood
  • Plants and mulch along the fence line wet down first and rinsed after

Wood Fence Pressure Washing

Cedar pickets on treated pine posts are the standard backyard fence here. New cedar starts out warm and reddish. Sun breaks down lignin, the glue that holds the wood fibers and carries the color. Within a year or two the whole run goes silver gray.

That gray sits on the surface. Washing takes off the dead layer and the dirt packed into the grain, so the color underneath shows again. How far it comes back depends on the wood itself. Pickets that are already cracked or splintered get clean, but they stay rough.

The shaded side of a fence is usually the worst of it. It holds moisture after rain, so growth spreads there first. Sprinkler heads that hit the boards leave white mineral marks behind, because the water here is hard. You can see fence work in our project photos.

Deck Cleaning for Wood and Composite Decks

Deck boards take more wear than a fence. Foot traffic grinds dirt down into the grain. Boards in the shade grow a thin algae film, and that film turns slick as soon as it rains.

Live oaks add their own mess. They drop last year's leaves in late winter and early spring, right as the pollen comes down. Wet leaves left sitting on a deck leave dark tannin stains in the wood. Clearing them off during leaf drop keeps the marks from setting.

Composite decking is softer than most people expect, so it gets low pressure and a soft brush with the solution. Mold on composite grows in the layer of pollen and dirt sitting on top of the boards. Wash that layer off and the mold goes with it. Concrete patios and pool decks are a different job and get our patio and pool deck pressure washing instead.

Deck and Fence Cleaning Before a Stain Job

Stain does not hold on dirty gray wood. It sits on the dead surface layer and starts peeling early. A wash pulls that layer off and opens the grain. Stain makers ask for the same thing on the can: a clean, dry surface.

Wood has to dry out after a wash. Two days of dry weather is the usual wait, and three days if the deck sits in shade. Pour a little water on a board to check it. Water that soaks straight in means the wood is ready for finish.

We handle the stain too. Fence staining, deck staining and wood fence restoration go on after the wash, once the boards pass that water test, so the finish lands on clean, open wood. If the siding needs attention at the same time, house washing can go on the same quote.

FAQ

Deck and Fence Questions, Answered

Common questions about deck and fence across the San Antonio to Austin corridor. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (512) 905-8038

Will pressure washing damage my wood fence or deck?
It can, at the wrong pressure. Cedar and pine are soft woods. Hard blasting raises the grain and leaves a fuzzy, splintered face on the board. We keep the pressure low, run a wide fan tip, and let the cleaning solution do most of the work.
Do you stain decks and fences?
Yes. Fence staining, deck staining and wood fence restoration are separate steps after the wash. The stain goes on once the wood is dry all the way through, so it lands on clean, open wood instead of the gray surface layer. See how our fence and deck staining works, or ask for it when you request your quote.
How long after cleaning can the deck be stained?
Give it about two days of dry weather. A deck in full shade can need three. Stain needs the wood dry all the way through. Wait out any rain that falls in between.
Will the gray come out of an old fence?
Most of it. The gray is sun damage on the surface, and washing lifts it off along with the dirt in the grain. Wood that has already cracked or splintered comes out cleaner but stays rough. We tell you what to expect when we look at the fence.
Can you clean a composite deck?
Yes. Composite is softer than wood, so it gets low pressure and a soft brush with the solution. Mold on composite lives in the film of pollen and dirt on top of the boards. Lifting that film off is the fix. For a new deck, see our deck builders page.
What does deck and fence cleaning cost?
Our services start at $299. Price depends on the size of the deck or the length of the fence. Heavy growth adds to it. Estimates are free and financing is available on larger projects. Call or text (512) 905-8038 and we will get you a number.
